RALEIGH, NC — What an incredible afternoon at NC State University! On Saturday, April 12, 2025, Witherspoon Student Center was filled with energy, curiosity, and thoughtful conversation as students, faculty, and community members came together to explore the future of our courts.

The event kicked off with the Braver Angels Program, where participants engaged in meaningful dialogue designed to bridge political divides and foster understanding—a powerful reminder of how respectful conversation can bring people together.

After a short break, we transitioned into a dynamic Panel Discussion featuring Justices Bob Orr and Michael Morgan. Together, they unpacked the growing partisanship in judicial elections, debated judicial appointments versus elections, and examined how campaign pressures affect judicial independence. The conversation was rich, engaging, and full of insights, with audience questions shaping much of the discussion.

Both justices emphasized the importance of voter awareness in upcoming judicial races. Justice Morgan noted that while politics is local, our local focus has increasingly become caught up in national events, urging attendees to stay informed and engaged with what’s happening in their own communities. Justice Orr added a clear warning that extreme partisanship is going to continue in future judge races, and encouraged the public to start thinking critically now to help shape a more balanced judicial future.

A special thank you to Kelly McCullen of PBS North Carolina for skillfully moderating the panel and guiding a thoughtful, balanced conversation that helped illuminate complex issues for everyone in the room.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for this important and exciting event! Your presence and participation made it a truly memorable experience—and a step forward in understanding the vital connection between politics and the judiciary. Stay tuned for more events like this!
